Brain Stem Studio offers full service audio production and mixing, specializing in heavy rock, punk, and metal, though we work with all genres.  Josh Schaefer, proprietor and engineer at Brain Stem Studio, began his audio engineering journey almost 20 years ago when he was tapped to run sound at church.  He became obsessed with learning about all things audio.  Problem solving and using all of the tools at his disposal to faithfully capture the highest quality sounds has always been what continues to draw Josh into the world of audio engineering.  Alongside his love of all genres of music, ranging from jazz, blues, metal, rock, and everything in between, it quickly became a passion.  He is a musician himself and has always enjoyed turning an idea into something tangible that people can enjoy for years to come.  Josh is also an experienced live sound engineer, having worked events with the likes of Guy Forsyth and Chris Duarte.

Though he has worked with various studios in the Austin area, Brain stem is Josh's home base.   With a control room of professional quality gear, a mic locker with high quality microphones, and a spacious tracking room, Brain Stem Studio has become a laid back, comfortable place to realize your musical ideas.  Josh prides himself on being accommodating and easy to work with, working to take each artist's unique sound and bring their vision to their listeners with their sound intact. His philosophy on recording is to create what the artist wants to create without getting in the way, in a laid-back, stress-free environment.
